I love to garage sale. When my kids school started using Accelerated Reader I asked the school for a list of the books they had the tests for. As I was going from sale to sale I would look for the books on the list. I would tell the the person in charge what I was doing and ask them to sell me the book for a quarter.I took the books home labled them AR with the reading level and point value. Then I took the books to the teachers lounge in a basket with an envelope and sold the books to the teachers for a qurater. Every week or two I picked up the money and added more books. My challange was keeping the basket full. My goal was to put so many books in the classroom that the teachers wouldn't need to worry if the books didn't come back from home. In three years I placed more than 2000 books in the school. It cost me time and several rolls of packing tape. The PTA eventually picked up the cost of the tape. The teachers and kids called me "the book lady". I had a blast. I was already going to the sales so it wasn't that much more work. The teachers don't have the time and each of them only need their own grade level. I looked for all books from Kindergarden thru 8th grade. I was suprised that the money envelope worked so well. I found out that in one school the janitor was buying some for his granddaughter too. In another school the secretary kept the evelope. Either way it worked easily. I can't begin to imagine how much it would have cost to purchase 2000 books retail. I was just one person and I changed every classroom in the school. If anyone want help with this idea I would love to see this pop up all over.
