PTA Great Idea Bank

A resource for PTA and parent involvement project ideas

What does your PTA/PTO do for fundraising and what redemptions programs do you participate in?

This year we are kicking off the year with a Beef Raffle, 10.00 for a side of beef. With the economy, and to fill your freezer for 10.00 we hope this will be a huge success.
We will do Little Caesars pizza kits, 18.00 for 3-12" pizzas frozen and ready to assemble. This brought us in 9,500 dollars last fall, we've recieved many requests to do this again this year. These are the two major fundraisers we planned for 09/10 school year.

The redemption programs we participate is are: Box Tops, Campbell soup labels, Swiss Valley caps for cash, Tyson project A+, and Our Family labels. Our family is a generic food company that will redeem 05 cents per upc. Tyson project A+ will give back .24 cents per label.
With the funds we recieve from our redemptions, we support the writing, math and guided reading programs in the primary, intermediate and middle school.

Our biggest PTA fundraiser is our Fall Fiesta which involves class theme basket raffles, bake sale, games etc. We do another fundrasier in the Spring which varies from catalog sales type to straight out donations. The school also does fundrasiers throughout the year.

For redemption the SCA (student council association) collects boxtops and Campbell labels.

Your beef raffle and pizza kits sound like great fundraier ideas. I am going to add those to my list of ideas I keep on hand. TFS.

We do Boxtops, Campbells and Coke Rewards.
I think any proceeds from Boxtops & Campbells go directly to the school.
We just started Coke Rewards last year and will probably order our first prizes soon.

We do a traditional catalogue type fundraiser each year towards the start of the year.
We hold a Fall Carnival in November.
Last year we did one Open Gym Night (drop off kids and parents go on a date) and cleared $400 after expenses in just over 2 hours. We plan to do 4 of those this year. They aren't a lot of work and are an easy way to bring in some money.
We may do a 50/50 raffle this year.

I love the idea of Open Gym Night! We will be adding that one to our list and recruiting volunteers once a quarter as sitters. Thanks for sharing!

We do a "Penny Race" which the kids LOVE!!!! We put each grade level in competition with each other (there are about 4-5 classes per grade level K-5). The way it works is everything is converted to "points".
1 penny=1 point
1 dollar bill=100 points
Then we throw loops into it to make it more fun!!!!
SILVER is SUBTRACTED from the total (ie a quarter = -25), so the kids bring in the silver in baggies with another teacher (in their grade level)name on it.
$20 bills and Checks (written to the PTA) of $20 or more are worth DOUBLE points!!!!

I know it's a little confusing, but the kids get it. The only grade level that DOESN'T subtract silver is Kindergarten (it got too confusing for them).

The class that wins in each grade level gets a prize (we use popsicles, extra recess, homework pass for the whole class, etc). in the 2007-2008 school year (when *I* ran the penny race) we made $1200 or so. I have no idea how well we did last year.

We also participate with our local grocery stores (Giant, Food Lion, and McKays) and have our parents register their bonus cards through us. Then we get a small portion of their purchases donated to the PTA.

Also we do Tyson's A+ Labels, Campbell's Labels, and Box Tops.

We have a Papa John's "spirit" night where papa johns donates a portion of each order (when they mention our school) to the PTA. This happens once a month.

Plus we do a "Spirit Night" at Chick Fil A.

We also participate in Box Tops, Campbell's and Capri Sun pouches program. I will have to look into the Tyson project A+ and Our Family labels. Thank you for the great ideas. I am a first time PTA president and it is quite overwhelming. I have been the secretary and vp but now I am starting to feel the pressure.

We just started Capri Sun at my school. Do you need to go to the UPS store and get a ton of envelopes on your own. Or do you email Terracyle and they send them to you? I know they are starting the mailing labels online so I'm guess I need to go and get my own envelopes now too. I was just wondering. Thanks!

We have had a Fall Festival and we are looking for some ideas as to some new, neat booths and items we might could sale to raise money. This is our biggest fund-raiser and we really need to increase our revenue.

We have a Twisted Pen Factory kit that was bought by a board prior to us. We never got around to using it last year as no one knew how. I took the time to figure out how to use it last week and we sold all 28 pens that I made in one 2 hour "Meet the Teacher Night" event. We could have sold more if I had made more. We sold them for $1 each. We plan to use those again for our Homefest booth and other events this year. The kids loved them.

Some of the games or activities that we have at our Fall Carnival -
* pie toss (did this for the first time last year and it was a huge hit)
* cake walk (have used Little Debbies in the past - this year may do a "book walk" instead)
* spin to win
* bike safety course (with donated helmets to give out as they go through it)
* cornhole
* sucker tree
* bullseye with one of those suction cup dart guns
* we got a blow up skee-ball type game at the party store last year
* several other games - we usually have about 2 dozen different game booths

We rent out booth space to vendors. Mary Kay, Avon, Tupperware, Uppercase Living, face painters, characature artist, etc. Last year booth rental was $20. This year we are charging $25 and giving them a PTA membership and listing them on our website as well as the booth.

Last year we got a lot of our food donated from Steak & Shake (chili) and got cheap pizzas from some local restaurants. I think they gave us free breadsticks with the pizzas. We usually just sell lemonade to drink. One year we also did some hot apple cider. Last year we had cookie dough from our fundraiser that we used to sell cookies for dessert.

Instead of giving out prizes AT the game booths, last year we had "Bulldog Bucks" that they earned at the booths and then they went to our redemption room (think Chuck E. Cheeses) and got to buy a little bit bigger prizes than we used to have.

We've been using the paperlesspta website for fundraising opportunities in addition to what you mention above. Its worked great for us here in Montvale, we use it to organize and advertise any event at our schools! Maybe they can help you out as well - www.paperlesspta.com. Hope they can help you!

(Here is an idea submitted via e-mail to PTA)

Go Green Totes
Our First Flight High School PTSA President, Bev Boswell, is a font of fund raising ideas that are different - and FUN! This year Bev ordered cases of beautiful large blue totes imprinted with our school name. As a fund raiser, we sold the totes for $5 each - many local merchants were delighted to display the totes in their businesses and sell them for us. We sold them during school athletic events and other evening activities during the school year. So many were sold, that the PTSA was able to present each teacher on staff with a complimentary tote during Teacher Appreciation Week!

Custom printed reusable tote bags are a GREAT way to fundraise - and it's much easier than candy and catalogs, or planning events. I also know of a company called Ecology Packaging that offers really high quality, custom printed bags that are ideal for fundraising. A PTA in our area made over $1600 on one order - by selling them for $5 each. Their website is www.ecologypkg.com.

I have worked with them on a few projects and have found their pricing competitive and their staff very helpful. Ordering online is EASY!! School NW Pricing 2009.pdf
