PTA.org features a section to help parents get involved in child safety programs and initiatives. PTA.org/childsafety provides resources for what you need to know, how to get started and where you can go to make safety choices easier for parents.
Does anyone have a book bag ban at their school? I have a proactive way to deal with the school safety issues regarding book bags. Check out inpackbookbag.com to see a new book bag our school is allowing the children to carry onto and around campus. Traditional book bags have to be left in the student lockers.
An excellent way to get started in promoting child safety is to make available to children the Words To say Out Loud series of books. These books are dedicated to empowering children with Words To Say Out Loud (using their BIG voices) to draw attention to people who are trying to harm them. I am so excited about this series that I have created a safety presentation for children all over the world. See the attached flyer which describes the presentation.
Our school, and many schools in Utah, have loved the radKIDS program, (Resisting Aggression Defensively) a hands-on approach to safety with drills and simulation to help kids establish a plan for all kinds of safety situations. Teachers must be trained and you must have access to safety pads.
This program teaches kids when and how to protect themselves. We teach our kids how to be polite, but we don't teach them how to tell adults "No!" when they are trying to hurt them. I am so tired of hearing about child abductions every day. I took the 10 hour training and now help teach it after school. Kids love it. Check out this program at www.radkids.org.
