PTA Great Idea Bank

A resource for PTA and parent involvement project ideas

My son's high school has a summer reading program that is not consistent amongst students (general studies, honors, CP, IB). The PTSA Parents ultimate desire is to amend the school-wide policy. I am seeking any information on other school's that have a summer reading program. What are the requirements, qty of books to be read, result of reading (such as a project or papers to be written); percentage of grade for 1st semester, etc.

Our school district has a terrific summer reading program for all students K-12. I was hoping to include a link to the program information but unfortunately, the school's website was just revised and the summer reading info is no longer on the site. Here's what I remember. I was impressed with the program because of the variety of books and the variety of options for the kids' projects in response to the books. There were two different lists of books to choose from, one for all students and college prep and the other for honors.

My son was an incoming freshman this summer and as an honors student was asked to read three books from a list of about 6 or so. One of the titles was requried of all students ("Lord of the Flies") and the kids had to choose the other two. (My son chose "A Separate Peace" and "Cry Freedom") For one of those titles they had to choose one "entree' option" from a list of 12 projects to complete for the book. This list of options was the same for all students (general studies, honors, and college prep) and included things like "create a persuasive pamphlet essay", "select a piece of music that captures the feel, tone or message of the novel and write about it", "yearbook entries: imagine what 3 or 4 characters from your novel were like in high school", "create a scrapbook or photo album for one of your characters", "write three poems in response to your novel", "write a letter to the author", etc.

Melanie - thank you very much for responding. May I ask what state you are in?
