PTA Great Idea Bank

A resource for PTA and parent involvement project ideas

Hi - I'm new to this. Our elementary school is thinking of doind a read a thon. We would like to put together some sort of reward for all participants and I'm looking for low cost ideas. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Do you have any book stores (Borders, Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, etc) in your community that would be willing to donate giftcards from their store as prizes? Does your PTA have money to purchase $5 gift cards to a local book retailer? You could have a contest by class or by grade for the number of books read or number of pages read, with the winner of each getting a gift card. Perhaps give a bookmark to every child that participates to acknowledge their effort. Worse case if you can't get gift card donations and your PTA doesn't have much money, is to buy however many gift cards your PTA can afford, and put the winners' names from each grade or classroom into a hat and draw names for who wins the gift card(s).

We have lap cards for our walkathons, where for every lap, the child gets a hole punched in their card. They take great pride in filling the cards with holes. Perhaps something similar for a read a thon - punch a hole in their card for every book, then after the event the card is the keepsake (or perhaps top readers get the gifts listed by others here).
