Used Book Sales (an excerpt from PTA's Great Idea Bank)
Idea: Collect donated used books from community. Have drop-off sites in the community (hardware store, library branch, fitness outlets, restaurants) as well as the school library and publicize need for donated books with posters, marquee announcements, email trees, PTSA newsletter and back-to-school night.
Volunteers sort books by category, omitting only those inappropriate for sale to minors in a public school. Donations can also include CDs, DVDs, books on tape, VHS tapes.
School students and staff can have "early bird" access on sale day. Then the sale can open up to the public after school hours--Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning. Teachers let students come during study blocks, lunch hours and some class time as well.
Books are priced $1 or less, except for collectibles and sets.
Leftovers are both stored and donated to other community charities.
In 2006-07, this project netted $2,400.
This project started after an annual spring plant sale had run its course. The sale competed with community businesses, duplicated other groups' charitable efforts, and was vulnerable to vagaries of weather.
The number of donated books has grown exponentially, especially after the event became more widely known. Teacher participation--by donating books, supplies, and their time as well as encouraging attendance--has also grown. (PTSA has had 100 percent faculty membership the past 2 years from this and other efforts).
Benefits: This project takes into account the needs/wants of people who aren't as involved at the high school level. The community has military families who must move frequently. The book sale becomes both the beneficiary of donations and the source for new reading matter for these families. Teachers get an affordable opportunity to supplement classroom materials -- books in foreign languages, for example.
