PTA Great Idea Bank

A resource for PTA and parent involvement project ideas

Just wondering if there have been any discussions at your SEPTA meetings on how you will advocate for where these funds are allocated? As these are "new" funds, this is a "new" issue for advocates of students with special needs.

Our group hasn't really discussed it. My personal opinion is that the district has a better idea of big picture needs and they have made appropriate decisions so far. We're leaving it up to them.

It is my understanding that Federal guidelines dictate parent input on allocation of these funds. Historically, if one is a parent of a special needs child with an IEP, there are often holes in delivery and quality of services. Also, IDEA has never been fully funded by government, so these Recovery funds are important for our students with disabilities. It's wonderful that you are confident in your district. I have met many parents across the country who do not have this confidence.

I did not know there was a federal guideline on parental input for the allocation of funds. I know my district hired (reassigned) another person to help classroom and SPED staff on advising on best teaching practices for SPED students. I think this has been a great asset to my district. I am not sure where the remainder of the money has been used.
