PTA Great Idea Bank

A resource for PTA and parent involvement project ideas

Hi!  I am a parent of a son with multiple special needs.  I am also the PTA President for our school which is all special needs ages 5 to 21.  We have about 90 students.

I am wanting to get input from PTAs and parents on how they feel about not having a Special Needs division for National Reflections program.  I would like to see this changed.  I don't think it is fair to any of the students who are entering this great program to have a student, like my son to come in and enter in their division.  My son is 15, but he functions at the 6-7 yr old level.

Please give me your input and thoughts!  I am considering bringing this up at the National PTA Convention and need more input from you all!  Thanks so much in advance!

I agree with Theresa's idea wholeheartedly! I have the same issue with my 14y/o autistic daughter, who functions (in some areas) at a much younger developmental age, although she attends a regular Middle School campus, with SpEd support. She would like to enter in the photography catagory, but it's not fair to either her or her GenEd peers to enter in any of the existing age groups. PTA currently says that she can enter at whatever age level we feel is appropriate, but that would be awkward entering in an Elementary level, when she is in Middle School. I would very much like to see PTA acknowledge that SpEd kids can be artistic too, and we should encourage them to be creative by being able to participate in Reflections. The problem would be, how do you sub-group the SpEd Reflections catagory? There is a WIDE range of artistic abilities there, so it, too, would be unfair to lump all SpEd kids into one group. Would it work to group only by chronological age?

I hope to see this proposed at National Convention this year so we can all engage in the discussion. Carol and Theresa have valid points that I hope NPTA is willing to address and consider, since our mission is everychild.onevoice.
