Long: Discussion about designing, configuring, implementing and promoting online technology for local PTAs with an eye towards aesthetic simplicity and practical functionality. Other tech-related topics are welcome.

I have a local, nascent PTA Tech group and a phpBB:

Of particular interest is a "Gallery of Websites". Feel free to submit more.
I have only asked about 4 or 5 people so far, but I intend to ask more. If you don't mind chewing on this yourself, and asking your local community, I would love to hear more ideas. Here is what I…Continue

Comment by Tanja Eltze on March 6, 2013 at 7:58pm Tracy, seems like "Members & More" would be the perfect fit for you. It does handle membership, directory (printed or electronic), reporting to your State PTA (membership roster and dues report), print your membership cards, volunteer management including the recording of volunteer hours, email communication, a host of other reports,... The only thing you mentioned that is not covered is the website, but there are several free options for 501(c)(3) organizations. You can also import your family and student data from your existing excel spreadsheets and export into new spreadsheets to slice and dice your data as needed. It is easy to use and inexpensive.
Comment by Linda Johnson on August 9, 2012 at 2:40pm There were several companies that had webiste and social media products at national convention. wazzin.com and patch.com, I think most parents want an easy way to access information that gives them concise clear information about what is going on at their school, what resources are available to them in their community, and a way to network with other parents. It needs to be accessible in whatever language is needed in your community.
Comment by Tracy Case on June 3, 2012 at 8:09am I am looking for an all in one solution for our PTA. I have tried Just Between Friends and it is not all that. I looked at PTO manager but they don't handle the directory. Does anyone know of a software that will handle website, directory, membership, reporting for local and national PTA,volunteer management and be easy to use? Parents don't want to mess with this and we want it on the back end but many softwares make the parents approve or join and we just want to upload our excel spreadsheet with all our members and then add members, export to excel spreadsheets as needed, and email parents newsletters. etc. seems like there is not anything that does all this!
any ideas?
Comment by Charles Schultz on January 27, 2012 at 12:45pm So during recent talks with some local folks, I am starting to realize that facebook is probably the "best of breed" option for your run-of-the-mill platform to get stuff online about your group. This is due to the fact that lots of people are using it; which means people know it, people read it, people participate.
What will the next thing be? Whatever it is, I doubt we can build a framework that is flexible enough to survive both the evolution of technology and the demands of sustainability. So my conclusion is that we stand up something simple and expect a short lifetime, say maybe 5 years max.
Comment by Charles Schultz on January 9, 2012 at 3:28pm Man, it's hard to get discussions going on "The Great Idea Bank". Anyone else have any thoughts on PTA websites?
Comment by Charles Schultz on December 13, 2011 at 9:28pm Michael - exactly my thought. Exactly!
Comment by Michael Dawson on December 12, 2011 at 2:31pm I'm aware of Schoolwires, but I am looking for something more "out of the box" with easy manipulation of basic fields. It seems like so many schools have 95% same website needs, I'm surprised nobody has product-ized it yet. Great opportunity for an interested developer...

Comment by Charles Schultz on December 8, 2011 at 4:45pm So, I am curious, why the lack of discussion and communication on this website? :) Can that be a topic of discussion in itself?
